Thoroughbreds suffer 67-48 setback at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team dropped a mid-week road conference game at Union on Tuesday evening, 67-48.

Skidmore drops to 7-7 in the Liberty League and remains in fourth place with four games remaining in the regular season. The Thoroughbreds are 12-7 overall. Union improves to 6-8 in the league and 7-12 overall.

Darby Leid led four Union players in double figures with 21 points. She went 4-of-7 from 3-point range. As a team, Union was 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

Kate McCarney finished with 18 points to lead Skidmore. She was 10-for-13 (76.9 percent) in free throws. Julia Blanck had a double-double (10 points, 16 rebounds), her ninth double-double of the year and third straight. She also blocked four shots. Clare Driscoll also had 10 points with seven boards and two blocks.

The Thoroughbreds got off to a good start shooting in the first quarter, hitting at a 43.8 percent clip. Skidmore shot just 20 percent (9-of-45) the rest of the way and went 1-for-11 in 3-point attempts over the final three quarters.

A split first quarter, in which neither team lead by more than four points, ended with an 18-all deadlock. Skidmore had the lead, 28-27, until Leid made a pair of 3-pointers in the final 70 seconds of the half to send the Dutchwomen into the break ahead by five. The Union defense allowed one point over the first 4:09 of the third quarter to take a stranglehold on the contest.

A three from Kennedy Clark put Union ahead by double digits for the first time with 2:41 left in the third period. Skidmore's deficit remained in double figures throughout the fourth quarter.

Skidmore will travel to Bard and Vassar this weekend Feb. 11 and 12.
