Thoroughbreds close regular season, secure #5 seed, with 78-66 win over Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team earned a 78-66 road victory at Clarkson on Saturday to close the regular season. With the win, in combination with other Liberty League results, the Thoroughbreds will be the #5 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded St. Lawrence on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Skidmore wraps the regular season with a 13-10 overall record and 9-8 in the Liberty League. Clarkson wraps its year at 6-19 and 3-15.

Greg Skoric delivered his second double-double of the weekend and 17th on the year. He led all players with a season high 25 points and 18 rebounds. He also added three assists. Riley Greene had 18 points with six assists, while Harrison Eichelberger finished with nine points and nine boards.

Blake Gearhart led the way for the Golden Knights with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and three assists.

Skidmore sprinted to an early lead after scoring the game's first 12 points. The lead was as high as 14 in the first half before the Thoroughbreds went into the half with an advantage of eight.

Clarkson hung around long enough to make it interesting in the middle of the second half. The Golden Knights pinched Skidmore's lead down to six with 7:52 remaining. The Thoroughbreds quickly re-affirmed their dominance with a 12-2 run on six points each from Skoric and Greene over a span of 3:16 to put it away.

"The challenges this group has gone through this year has been as tough as anything I've dealt with in my 25 years of coaching," Skidmore coach Joe Burke said. "We don't make covid situations public, but the perseverance this group has shown speaks a lot about their character. This team is 10-1 when healthy and together. They deserved a chance to be in the playoff and we will get that shot on Tuesday."
