POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.— The Skidmore College women's basketball team battled Liberty League leader Vassar College, dropping a 75-64 Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Thoroughbreds clinched a playoff berth with two games remaining. Skidmore is 13-8 overall and 8-8 in league play. The team is tied with Union for fourth place and ½ game in front of sixth place RIT. The top three teams are set with Vassar, Ithaca, and St. Lawrence jockeying for first through third.
Kate McCarney and
Clare Driscoll scored 15 points each to pace Skidmore. McCarney added nine rebounds, while Driscoll pulled down eight.
Dani Douglas led Vassar with 28 points, including an 8-11 performance from beyond the arc.
Skidmore led 16-12 after the first quarter behind seven points from Driscoll and
Julia Blanck. Vassar bounced back in the second, using an 11-0 run to open a 33-22 lead with 3:00 to play. The Thoroughbreds got to within nine, 36-27 at the half.
The Brewers extended the lead to 59-45 after three quarters. Skidmore rallied in the fourth, getting to within five, 64-59 with 4:28 to play. Vassar regrouped to hold on for the 75-64 win.
Skidmore will close out the regular season next weekend with its North Country trip, starting with Friday's 5:30 p.m. game at St. Lawrence.
