SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior
Mike Gelatt scored on a rebound with 0.2 seconds remaining in the third period to tie it at two for the Skidmore College men's hockey team in a 2-2 tie with UMass Boston in the regular season finale on Saturday.
Â
The sides will meet again next Saturday, Feb. 19 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Quarterfinals. Skidmore (14-9-2, 9-7-2 – 29 pts NEHC) is the No. 6 seed headed into the tournament and will travel to third-seeded UMass Boston (14-7-4, 10-4-4 – 35 pts NEHC).
Â
Gelatt emerged from a hoard of bodies in front and buried a rebound ahead of the buzzer for the equalizer after a shot in from the point from
Devon Mussio.
Mason Beecher made a backhand pass out to Mussio after stepping around his defender.
Â
Neither team cracked in the five-minute overtime period. The Beacons led in shots, 3-1, despite significant possession time by Skidmore. A 2-on-1 Thoroughbred rush in the closing seconds was cut off by the horn.
Â
Skidmore went ahead at the 4:50 mark of the first period when
Freddie Macciocchi dug out a puck from the left-wing corner and found a wide-open
Thomas Finck in the high slot. Finck elected to pass to
Callahan Johnson on the back door over a point-blank shot. Johnson stuffed it in for his sixth of the year.
Â
The thoroughbreds played ahead until Jeffrey Skinner tied it for the Beacons with 43 seconds to play in the second period. He jammed in a loose puck rebound on a shot from the point by Evan Heldt that flipped over Skidmore netminder
Tate Brandon. Chris Peters also assisted, the first of his two on the afternoon.
Â
UMass Boston grabbed a 2-1 lead at 5:33 of the third period on a short angle wrister from Nolan Barrett. He scooped up the puck off the end wall on a wide shot from Peters. Alex Duncan earned an assist on the breakout pass to Peters.
Â
Skidmore's power play came up empty in five chances, which included nearly four consecutive minutes of power play time in the second period. UMass Boston was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Â
Skidmore, fueled by a 14-5 third period, won the shot battle 38-30. Brandon had 28 saves for the Thoroughbreds, and Sam Best turned in a 36-save effort for the visitors. Â Â
