Middlebury stops Thoroughbred steak at four

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Middlebury College outscored Skidmore College 13-1 in the second quarter on the way to a 53-29 women's basketball win Friday night at the Williamson Athletic Center. The loss snapped an early season four game win streak for the 5-2 Thoroughbreds. The Panthers have won four of five for a 5-3 record.
 
  • Emmy Plage was the lone Skidmore player in double figures with 10 points to go along with two steals. Kate McCarney had a team-high nine rebounds and five points.
  • Alexa Mustafaj led the Panthers with 23 points and three assists. Gabby Stuart added 11 points and Augusta Dixon came off the bench to score eight points and pull down 10 rebounds.
  • Scoring was at a premium from the start. Skidmore built a 10-8 first quarter lead behind six points from Plage and two each from Julia Blanck and McCarney. The Thoroughbreds held Middlebury to 18.8 percent shooting from the floor (3-16).
  • Skidmore had its own shooting struggles in the second quarter, going 0-18 to trail 21-11 at the half. The Panthers took control in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 39-20 after three.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished 11-60 (18.3%) from the floor, while Middlebury was 20-48 (41.7%).
  • The team came into the contest averaging 68.67 points per game. The 29 points were the program's lowest total since a 56-28 loss to Williams College in 2012.
  • Skidmore is 2-1 against New England Small College Athletic Conference teams.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds will play Wilkes University in the Springfield Naismith Tournament on Dec. 30. And then another NESCAC team in Trinity College on Dec. 31 at Springfield.
