Bantams hold off late charging Thoroughbreds, 59-57

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Skidmore College women's basketball team overcame a 16-point second-half deficit, but fell just short in a hard fought 59-57 loss to Trinity College Saturday in the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic played at Springfield College. The Thoroughbreds are 6-3, while the Bantams have won eight straight for an 11-1 record.
  • Julia Blanck and Sarah Chambers were selected to the all-tournament team. Blanck had a team-high 11 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Chambers scored nine points and had three rebounds.
  • Emmy Plage and Kate McCarney scored 10 each.
  • 00The Thoroughbreds worked out a 13-11 first quarter lead. Blanck's layup with 3:01 to play gave Skidmore its first lead of the game 10-9. Chambers had a layup and hit one of two free throws to close out the quarter.
  • Trinity found its way in the second quarter, outscoring the Thoroughbreds 19-10 for a 30-23 lead at the half. The Bantams pulled away in the third quarter, going up 47-31 with 2:53 to play in the quarter.
  • Skidmore wasn't finished though. The Thoroughbreds chipped away at the Bantam lead, then used a late 9-0 fourth quarter run to cut it to 53-52. McCarney hit a key three with 3:23 to play to cap the run. The Bantams hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 55-52, but Blanck got it back to one, 55-54 off an assist from McCarney. Three more Trinity free throws made it 58-54 with :15 left. Amelia Medolla hit a three with five seconds left to cut it to 58-57, but another made free throw sealed the 59-57 win.
  • It was the first time the teams have faced each other since a 2014 game at the Williamson Sports Center, won by Trinity 65-62.
  • The contest was the final non-league game for the Thoroughbreds who were 4-3 out of conference. Skidmore will host Union on Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. and RIT on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.
