Skidmore comes out ahead in tussle with Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and went on a 13-0 second-half run for a 76-70 victory to kick off its North Country road trip on Friday.

  • Skidmore improves to 3-3 and 1-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson is 2-3 and 0-1.
  • Tautvydas Kupstas led all players with 24 points. He was 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) in field-goal attempts.
  • Alexei Downie had a double-double. He scored 11 and racked up 10 rebounds.
  • Riley Greene scored 19, had six rebounds, and dished out three assists.
  • Bobby Stratts went 4-of-6 from the field to score eight points. He also had 10 boards.
  • The two-headed cog of Ryan Miles-Ferguson (23) and Blake Gearhart (21) combined for 44 of Clarkson's 70 points.
  • The lead changed hands 16 times with 11 tied scores throughout the contest.
  • Clarkson rolled off eight straight to take a three-point lead (43-40) early in the second half.
  • Neither team led by more than four points until Kupstas dropped a bucket with 4:42 left.
  • A minute earlier, Stratts gave Skidmore the lead for good when he pulled down an offensive rebound and quickly laid the ball off the glass to give Skidmore a 62-61 lead. The play kicked off a decisive 13-0 run for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Skidmore's lead grew to 12 with 1:09 left after Harrison Eichelberger connected on a pair of free throws.
  • Kupstas blocked a Gearhart 3-point attempt with 16 seconds remaining to seal it.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will complete the weekend road trip on Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Lawrence.
  • Coach Joe Burke: "Any league win on the road is a good one. Clarkson can present some matchup problems if you don't bring it on the defensive end and I thought we did that especially during a pivotal stretch late in the second half ... Another tough one on the road tomorrow. Will be a different kind of game. We will need to adjust some things on both ends without Greg back there again."
