Skidmore advances to Liberty League Championship in penalty kicks over Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team will play in the Liberty League Championship game after beating Vassar in penalty kicks on Friday.
  • The Thoroughbreds, seeded third, will travel to top-seeded and nationally 15th-ranked St. Lawrence on Sunday for the league title game. St. Lawrence beat RIT, 1-0, in the other semifinal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Bobby Stratts stopped three of the five Vassar shooters after neither team scored following 90 minutes of regulation and 20 more in overtime.
  • Finn Weber, Kamal Ibrahim, and Ethan Slager all made their penalties for Skidmore (9-3-6) to win the shootout 3-2.
  • After Duncan Keker converted his kick to open the shootout for the Brewers, Ethan Kilmnick's strike drilled the outside of the goal frame and stayed out to put the Thoroughbreds in a 1-0 hole.
  • Stratts stopped three of the final four Vassar shooters, including a save on Ryan Lane in the fifth round, to clinch it.
  • In addition to the three penalty kick stops, Stratts had six saves throughout regulation and overtime.
  • Vassar squeaked out a narrow 16-14 edge in shots in the contest, but Skidmore produced several prime scoring chances throughout the back-and-forth affair.
  • Ibrahim had seven shots and two on frame with a handful of scoring opportunities.
  • Vassar hit a pair of crossbars in the game: one near the end of the first half and another in the first part of the overtime period.
  • Skidmore outshot Vassar 3-1 in overtime, with both goalkeepers relied on for one save.
  • Eric Wnorowski finished with four saves for the Brewers, who bow out of the tournament with an overall record of 9-4-4.
  • Skidmore withstood a hefty 16-4 Vassar advantage in corner kicks.
  • Skidmore will appear in the championship game for the first time since 2016. Skidmore was the Liberty League runner-up three times in a four-season span from 2013-16.
