SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team has a long list of to-dos for the upcoming season. Namely, win the Liberty League title. The journey begins on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Williamson Sports Center at 7 p.m. against New Paltz.
The Thoroughbreds have won five league championships since 2011. This year, Skidmore looks to climb the mountain for the first time since 2019.
The Thoroughbreds battled through injury and illness during the 2021-22 season. In the end, they got the ball rolling to win two playoff games on the road to reach the tournament championship game, where the run hit a roadblock against Vassar.
Skidmore finished the 2021-22 season with a 15-11 overall record, and a 9-8 mark in the conference to finish the regular season fifth. The Thoroughbreds were picked fourth, with one first-place vote, in the recent
Liberty League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Five players on last year's team averaged double digits in scoring. Four of them are back.
Tautvydas Kupstas scored 17.4 points per game to lead the Liberty League. With over 39 minutes played per contest, he finished as the national leader in time on the court. He was voted to the All-Liberty League First Team for 2021-22.
Greg Skoric was also an All-Conference recipient last year as an Honorable Mention selection. Skoric had 19 double-doubles to finish in the top-10 nationally with games of 10+ points and 10+ rebounds. He scored 15.7 ppg and 12.2 rebounds with 2.0 blocks per game.
Harrison Eichelberger averaged 11.04 points last year, and
Riley Greene had 11.1 ppg and 5.36 assists.
The Thoroughbreds scored 71.04 points on average while hitting from the field at 41.3 percent and 29.6 percent from long range.
On Oct. 30, the Thoroughbreds took Division I UAlbany to the brink in a 71-69 exhibition loss that came down to the final play.
With a roster stocked with a dozen returners and plenty of experience, Skidmore feels poised for a big year with contributions from players up and down the lineup.
