Thoroughbreds topple Hobart 2-0 and advance to semifinals

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's soccer team moved on to the Liberty League Semifinals for the second consecutive season with a 2-0 victory over Hobart College under the Tuesday evening lights of Wachenheim Field.

  • Skidmore (9-3-5) will travel to second-seeded Vassar on Friday at 2:30 p.m. for a semifinal matchup. The winner will play either at home versus RIT or on the road at top-seeded St. Lawrence for the championship on Sunday.
  • Junior Kamal Ibrahim tied the program's single season record with his 15th goal of the year. He now shares the mark with Andrew Simon '02, who scored 15 goals in 2001.
  • Senior Brady Trenchard also scored for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Fellow senior Bobby Stratts earned his third consecutive shutout and his fourth over his last five games for Skidmore.  He finished with five saves.
  • Ibrahim put the Thoroughbreds ahead in the 35th minute when he connected from short range after a Skidmore cross was deflected to him off a Hobart (8-5-5) foot.
  • Trenchard doubled the lead on a mad scramble in front of the Hobart goal, accepting good fortune when a Statesmen clearance attempt caromed off his body and into the back of the net.
  • The contest began with a swift pace and Hobart had the first scoring opportunity. James Varriano stopped Quinn Phillips's shot from going in in just the fourth minute, and Stratts came to the rescue to rob a point-black Nolan Fierro shot just seconds later.
  • Shots finished at an 18-9 advantage for Skidmore, although shots on goal were just 8-6.
  • Guillermo Castañeda Chang started in goal for Hobart and had three saves. Christian Burkhart made two stops in the second half.
