Skidmore offense clicks in 7-0 win over Utica

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Carrie Hughes and CC Wetter had two goals and an assist each to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 7-0 nonleague win over Utica University Wednesday afternoon at Wagner Park. The Thoroughbreds are 11-8, while the Pioneers are 7-8.
  • Wetter wasted no time putting Skidmore on the board :40 into the contest with her 10th goal of the season. Tobi Dolan made it 2-0 on a tip of a Kayla Hassett shot at 6:00 off a penalty corner. Wetter closed out the first quarter scoring from Hughes at 7:07.
  • Lauren Ruggiero scored on a blast from just inside the circle off a Dolan insert on a penalty corner at 23:46 for a 4-0 lead at the half.
  • Skidmore added three more in the third quarter. Hughes notched her 20th of the season on a corner at 31:38. Morgan Sickels made it 6-0 from Wetter at 36:13. Hughes scored the final goal off another corner at 41:17.
  • The Thoroughbreds outshot Utica 20-4 and held a 12-3 corner lead. Victoria Bodnar and Juliana Yglesias combined for a three-save shutout. Bodnar had a key save when she came out and stuffed a Utica attacker in the third quarter.
  • It was the third straight win in the series for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds hold a 16-4 lead.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore tunes up for the Liberty League tournament with a nonleague contest on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at SUNY Cortland. The Thoroughbreds face Vassar College on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. in Poughkeepsie in a Liberty League quarterfinal.
