Skidmore clinches playoff spot with 2-1 win at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Isabella Nevin and Liz Foley scored for the Skidmore College women's soccer team in a 2-1 road victory at Union College on Tuesday evening. The Thoroughbreds have clinched a playoff spot while simultaneously eliminating the Dutchwomen from postseason contention.

  • Skidmore improves to third in the Liberty League at 4-1-3. The Thoroughbreds can finish anywhere between third and sixth. William Smith and Ithaca have locked in the top two spots and first-round byes. The three and four seeds host First Round games next Tuesday, Nov. 1.
  • Skidmore can clinch the third spot and a date with the sixth seed with a win over Bard on Saturday.
  • Nevin scored unassisted at the 6:04 mark to open the scoring. It was her fifth goal of the season. The strike went over the outstretched keeper's hand.
  • Sam Friedman squared it up at one for Union just 45 seconds into the second half.
  • Liz Foley scored the game winner in the 69th minute on a long free kick that found the net when Union goalkeeper Rachel Berliner slipped while taking a step to pursue the ball.
  • For Skidmore, Claire Wolgast finished with five saves in the victory. Berliner had one save, and Union starter Abby Mitty made two saves in split duty.
  • The Thoroughbreds flipped the script in the second half, outshooting the hosts 11-4 after falling behind 10-4 in the shot category in the first half.
  • Skidmore nearly re-gained its lead earlier, but Kat Dunn's shot from in close hit off the crossbar.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore closes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. on the road at Bard.
