Thoroughbreds power past Wildcats 5-0

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team avenged Friday evening's shutout loss with a 5-0 league victory of its own at Johnson & Wales on Saturday.
 
Four different players scored for the Thoroughbreds, who improve to 8-6-1 and 4-4-1 (13 points) in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). The Thoroughbreds sit tied for fifth in the conference with Norwich. The Wildcats fall to 4-10 and 2-6 (5 points).   
 
Mike Gelatt scored twice for the Thoroughbreds. It is his first multi-goal game since Nov. 9, 2019 - also against JWU. Senior captain Austin Rook had a goal and two assists. Danny Magnuson and Callahan Johnson also scored goals for Skidmore. Everett Wardle had two assists, while Ethan Heidepriem, Kevin Urquhart, and Kyle Delmaestro, and Devon Mussio all picked up an assist.
 
Blaine Moore, in his first start in league play, had 13 saves to earn his first collegiate shutout. Jaxon Friedman turned aside 35 shots on the other end for Johnson & Wales.
 
Skidmore led 2-0 after the first period thanks to goals by Gelatt and Rook separated by 71 seconds. Both Thoroughbred seniors beat Friedman on the blocker side. Skidmore killed two penalties in the opening 20, the start of a perfect 7-for-7 showing by the PK unit. On the season, the Skidmore sits with an 83.6 kill rate.
 
Magnuson scored the lone goal of the second period on the power play at the 14:09 mark. At 8:46 of the third, Johnson scored on a rebound for the first goal and point of the year. Gelatt completed the scoring with his second with 3:27 remaining.
 
Skidmore will play at Castleton on Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. before hosting Cortland on Saturday, Jan. 15.
