SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. –
Reid Russell broke a 1-1 deadlock with a power-play goal in the last minute of the second period and
Blaine Moore made 19 saves for the Skidmore College men's hockey team in a 2-1 victory over visiting Cortland in non-conference action.
Â
Both teams have their records sit 10-6-1 with the outcome. The Thoroughbreds have won three consecutive games and six of their last eight.
Â
Russell's fourth goal of the year served as the game winner. He got a pass across the slot from
Everett Wardle on the power play on the back door.
Mike Gelatt held the blue line to help create the chance and pick up an assist.
Â
Wardle also assisted on Skidmore's first goal, which briefly gave the Thoroughbreds the lead, late in the first period. He cleanly won the faceoff back to
Freddie Ilias, who ripped in a slap shot from the point. It's Ilias's second such goal in as many days.
Â
Cortland tied it with just under 40 seconds left in the first period on a Jona Hildreth wrist shot across his body past the blocker of Moore. Matt Jahn and Shane Beaulieu assisted on the Red Dragon rush.
Â
Skidmore held the guests scoreless in five power-play attempts, including one with just 4:22 left in regulation. On the late man advantage, Michael Sciore hit the post and the puck sat in the crease before Moore sprawled on it.
Â
Nick Grupp's would-be tying goal for the Red Dragons also hit the pipe in the closing seconds with Cortland's net empty. Both teams hit three posts.
Â
Moore's record in goal improves to a perfect 3-0. He has allowed just one goal in his last three appearances (140 minutes). Luca Durante started for Cortland and made 11 saves in 26 minutes of work. Owen Zdunski takes the decision in relief. He made 10 saves. Â
Â
The Thoroughbreds return to league play and will travel to New England College and Norwich Jan. 21 and 22. Â Â Â
