STANDISH, Maine—The Skidmore College field hockey team fell 3-2 to St. Joseph's College of Maine in a non-league road contest Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds finish the Maine trip at 1-1, while it was the season opener for the Monks
Mariah Redler and
Sofia Marshall scored for Skidmore.
St. Joseph's earned a pair of penalty corner attempts in the opening five minutes and converted both bids to put Skidmore down early, 2-0.
The 2-0 lead held until the fourth minute of the third quarter, when Marshall found the back of the cage off a
Carrie Hughes insertion pass off a corner. The Monks answered with their third corner tally of the afternoon in the fourth minute of the fourth frame.
The Thoroughbreds applied plenty of pressure in the closing minutes and the efforts paid off when Redler beat SJC freshman netminder Kassidy Collins off a
Lauren Ruggiero (Wellesley,
Mass.) feed with 29 seconds left, but the comeback bid would fall short with too little time remaining.
Jess Gaetgens had 11 saves for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds host Williams College on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
