SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Top ranked Middlebury College scored the game's final five goals on the way to a 7-1 field hockey win over Skidmore College Tuesday afternoon at Wagner Park.
The Thoroughbreds are 5-4. The 8-0 Panthers are three-time defending national champions and have won 15 straight and 36 of their last 37 games.
Grace Murphy put Middlebury up 1-0 off a perfect corner from Amy Griffin and Isabel Chandler at 3:38. Audrey Lazar made it 2-0 at 7:20 from Erin Nicholas. Skidmore got on the board two minutes later when
Sofia Marshall one-timed a pass off a rebound from
Morgan Sickels.
The Panthers closed out the quarter with a pair of goals :43 apart by Nicholas and Katie George.
After a scoreless second quarter, Middlebury added a pair in the third and one in the fourth for the 7-1 final. Lazar, Chandler, and Lilly Branka each scored.
Middlebury had a 25-3 shot and 12-3 penalty corner advantage.
Victoria Bodnar had eight saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Grace Harlan had one save in 53:53 for the Panthers.
Skidmore returns to Liberty League play on Oct. 4 with a 1 p.m. home game against Vassar.
