Statesmen edge Thoroughbreds in defensive battle, 1-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hobart defeated Skidmore 1-0 in Liberty League men's soccer action on Saturday at Wachenheim Field.

Charlie Widing scored the lone goal of the match for the Statesmen in the 29th minute. Matias Valenzuela Matic sent a pass to a streaking Widing, who found an empty net despite Skidmore goalkeeper Bobby Stratts being able to get a partial deflection with his left mitt.

Skidmore is now 5-3 and 1-1 in the Liberty League. Hobart improves to 4-3-1 and 1-0-1.

The Thoroughbreds won the shot battle, 11-7, but were unable to generate many quality scoring opportunities against Guillermo Castaneda Chang and the Statesmen back line. Chang made three saves in the shutout.

Roman Toepler shared the game-high with three shots. Perry Sofis-Scheft and Ethan Slager each had two.

The Thoroughbreds turn around with a non-conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at home for a night game against SUNY Cobleskill.
