Walk-off 2-1 win gives Thoroughbreds split with Ithaca

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Katie Wilkie scored on a Melissa Mathias sacrifice fly to short right to give the Skidmore College softball team a 2-1 extra-inning Liberty League win over Ithaca College Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The Thoroughbreds showed character with the game 2 victory after being no-hit in a 9-0 first game loss.

Skidmore is 11-7 overall and in the Liberty League, while the Bombers are 23-7 and 18-4. The teams will close out the series and regular season with a pair on Sunday in Ithaca.

The Thoroughbreds are in fourth place with a one-game lead over fifth place Clarkson.

GAME 1

Ithaca scored six unearned runs with two outs in the second inning and held Skidmore in check with a Beth Fleming no-hitter.

GAME 2

Hannah Davis found herself in a pitcher's duel with the Bomber's Riley Piromelli. Davis didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. She picked-up her second win of the season, allowing one run on two hits over eight innings. She walked one and struck out five.

Skidmore broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth when Katie Wilkie opened the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a Chloe McGonagle single. The Bombers tied it in the seventh.

After Davis got three straight outs in the top of the eighth, Wilkie took a 3-2 pitch to left field to open the Thoroughbred half of the inning. McGonagle had another clutch single and both runners advanced on a passed ball. One batter later, Mathias hit one to short right and Wilkie beat the off the mark throw for the win.
