Saints top Thoroughbreds in battle of unbeatens

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - St. Lawrence used a strong second half to defeat the Skidmore College women's basketball team, 73-62, on Saturday.

The Saints remain perfect at 7-0 following their Liberty League weekend sweep. The Thoroughbreds are 6-1 with the weekend split.

Kate McCarney scored 17 points and had three assists to lead Skidmore. Clare Driscoll finished with 13 points, while Emilija Jakumaite (11) and Andi Levitz (9) spearheaded the bench that outscored St. Lawrence's reserves, 25-5.

Stella Davis led St. Lawrence in scoring with 19 points and went 7-of-11 in field-goal attempts. Katie Frederick had a milestone day for the Saints with a double-double on 14 points (which included her 1,000th-career point) and 22 rebounds. Dylan Watkiss had 14 points of her own, and Ava McCann posted 13 points and a game-high six assists.

Skidmore held the visitors without a field goal until Frederick made a lay up with just seven seconds remaining in the opening quarter. The Saints were kept off the board entirely before Watkiss made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:44 to go in the first quarter.

St. Lawrence responded in the second quarter with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field to shrink the Skidmore lead to three at the half.

The Saints raced to a 14-2 run to grab the lead in the third quarter before four made Thoroughbred 3-pointers (three from Levitz, one by McCarney) led to a five-point Skidmore lead. Skidmore was ahead 50-49 going into the fourth quarter.

The Saints got the first 10 points of the final quarter to take command. The visitors went 5-of-7 from 3-point range over the final 10 minutes and held Skidmore to just two field goals.

Skidmore will return after the New Year at the Springfield Naismith Tournament.
