Skidmore on short end of St. Lawrence nail biter

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – St. Lawrence overcame a 16-point second half deficit and a go-ahead bucket by Trent Adamson with 71 seconds stood in a 58-57 victory for the Saints over the Skidmore College men's basketball team on Saturday.

Both teams split the opening weekend of Liberty League play. Skidmore is 5-2 overall and St. Lawrence is 5-1.

St. Lawrence out-scored Skidmore 33-19 in the second half and 22-5 over the final 15-plus minutes of play to grab momentum and take the win.

"We played a bad second half last night and got away with it, and a bad second half tonight and didn't," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. "We have a lot to learn and that starts with playing 40 minutes of basketball."

Greg Skoric (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Ty Lamport (15 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles to lead Skidmore. Harrison Eichelberger had 13 points. The Skidmore starters accounted for all 56 points as Tautvydas Kupstas finished with nine points, all on 3-pointers, and four assists. Riley Greene had a pair of points and did not commit a turnover.

Adamson had 24 points, with 18 in the second half, to lead the comeback for the visitors. He was 10-of-18 shooting overall and grabbed 11 boards for his double-double. Will Engelhart had 16 points. The duo combined for 40 of SLU's 58 points (69 percent).

The Saints hung around before Aidan Macaulay drained a three to make it an eight-point game with 6:35 to play. Engelhardt made two free throws and hit a 3-pointer the next trip down to shrink the Skidmore lead all the way down to three. Adamson brought in his own rebound and converted the put back to get to within one with 2:07 to play before getting the game-winner two possessions later.

"We have a young group and they will get better from this," Burke said. "We need to finish teams off and we didn't to it either night."

Skidmore will travel to Middlebury on Friday, Dec. 10 before closing the 2021 portion of the schedule at Claremont Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
