TROY, N.Y. – A late push for the equalizer by the Skidmore College field hockey team was snuffed by the Rensselaer defense as the Engineers defeated the Thoroughbreds, 2-1, in Liberty League action on Saturday morning.
RPI improves to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League. With four conference games remaining, Skidmore is 6-7 and 1-2.
Nina Caprio scored twice in a 1:50 span late in the third quarter to lift the Engineers from a one-goal deficit into the lead. Lauren Roy collected an assist on the winning goal. Senior
Carolyn Blackman scored her second goal of the year at the 13:55 mark to put Skidmore ahead. Fellow senior
Mariah Redler, the Thoroughbreds leading point-getter, assisted.
Skidmore attacked in the fourth quarter, earning six penalty corners and producing six shots in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Jen Richardson's three saves combined with three blocks and stout defensive play by the Engineers kept the Thoroughbreds out of the goal.
Richardson finished with seven saves.
Jess Gaetgens had five saves for Skidmore. Shots ended 13-10 in favor of the Thoroughbreds and penalty corners were 8-7 Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds are at Rochester on Friday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. before hosting William Smith to close Skidmore's Celebration Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.
