CANTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team got one in the 86
th minute, but the comeback was halted there as St. Lawrence defeated the Thoroughbreds, 3-2, on the strength of a pair of second-half goals.
Skidmore drops to 7-5-2 and 2-3-2 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence is 8-6-1 and 4-3-1. With eight points, the Thoroughbreds will use their final two contests to try for a playoff spot. Skidmore is currently seventh and two points behind Hobart.
St. Lawrence scored just 28 seconds into the contest when Marvin Sibanda slipped through the defense from the right wing and buried his third touch from 10 yards out. The Thoroughbreds got the equalizer at the 14:27 mark when
Roman Toepler's shot hit a body and rebounded to
Max Heberlein unmarked near the right post.
Max Mogul put the Saints up again, this time for good, late in the 50
th minute. After a Skidmore goal kick, Robert Reynolds forced a turnover near midfield and played the ball to Mogul, already at full speed, behind and Thoroughbred defense and in for a breakaway. The Saints got another one in the 64
th minute on a tic-tac-toe passing play between Da'Vaughn Anderson, Raphael Soccolaro, and the goal-scorer Reynolds. Reynolds finished with a goal and two assists.
Matteo Scarsellli scored on a header with 4:34 left to pull the Thoroughbreds to within one. It came after a Thoroughbred free kick when
Max Mian played it back to
Ethan Slager, who inserted the ball into traffic in front and it found its way to Scarselli for the first-career goal for the Skidmore senior. St. Lawrence shut it down the rest of the way to run the clock out on Skidmore.
Shots finished 18-11 in favor of the Saints, but the Thoroughbreds held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Bobby Stratts had four saves for Skidmore, while Ben Woelfinger made six stops for the hosts.
The Thoroughbreds have two games remaining in the regular season. They will host Clarkson on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. before going on the road to close at Bard on Saturday, Oct. 30.
