Thoroughbreds prevail 14-13 over Merchant Marine

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— Alex Miller scored a career-high five goals and Reed Seybolt had four goals and two assists to lead the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to a 14-13 win over Merchant Marine at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex Tuesday.
 
The win improves the Thoroughbreds to 3-2. The Mariners are 0-3.
 
In addition to the offense, Miller had four ground balls and a caused turnover. Will Stricker and Kyle Fink scored two goals each with Stricker adding an assist, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ward Mahoney tallied the other Thoroughbred goal.
 
Teddy Heroux had a team-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Christopher Downey played the final 32:01 to earn the win in net. He had four saves. Starter Benjamin Kacher had six saves over the first 27:59.
 
USMMA opened a 10-6 lead with 2:01 to play in the second quarter. The Thoroughbreds changed momentum when Kyle Fink scored at the buzzer to make it a three-goal game, 10-7, at the half.
 
Skidmore quickly regained the lead with four unanswered goals to open the third quarter. Stricker (14:19), Miller (13:24), and two from Seybolt (9:43, 7:38) made it 11-10 Thoroughbreds.
 
The Mariners responded with two goals to close the quarter for a 12-11 lead at the end of three quarters. Seybolt tied it at 13:10, then Miller put Skidmore back in front from Stricker at 10:00. USMMA knotted it again 13-13, before Seybolt scored the game winner at 7:01.
 
The Thoroughbreds shut the Mariners down for the rest of the way to preserve the 14-13 win.
 
Skidmore had a 52-49 ground ball and 49-38 shot advantage.
