GENEVA, N.Y.-The fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team scored a pair of second half goals to secure a 3-1 Liberty League win over Skidmore on Cozzens Field Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Skidmore is 5-2-2 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Herons are now 6-1-1 overall and 2-0
William Smith came out of the gate strong, applying pressure on Skidmore right from the opening whistle. The Herons opened the scoring in the fourth minute on Mariah Deschino's first goal of the season. Three minutes later, William Smith had a golden scoring chance turned aside by a diving
Ava Keller. Skidmore tied the game in the 20th minute.
Brianna Worobel collected a bouncing ball in the box and buried a shot for her second goal of the season.
In the 48th minute, William Smith took a 2-1 lead and then made it 3-1 in the 80
th minute.
The Herons outshot the Thoroughbreds 22-3, including a 10-0 margin in the second half. William Smith also earned a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
Ava Keller played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds return home to face Vassar on Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
