Thoroughbreds open Liberty play with 4-1 road victory

CANTON, N.Y.— Balanced scoring and tight defense held up for a 4-1 Skidmore College field hockey Liberty League win Saturday afternoon at St. Lawrence University.

It was the league opener for both teams. The Thoroughbreds are 4-5 and 1-0, while the Saints are 3-6 and 0-1.

Skidmore opened the scoring on Jordan Mjaatved's unassisted goal following a scramble when the ball was put into the middle on a penalty corner at 21:28.

SLU had a chance right after the Skidmore goal, but goalie Jess Gaetgens stopped Mckenzie Habert in close to turn the threat aside and preserve a 1-0 lead at the half.

Skidmore made it a 2-0 game two minutes into the second half when Sarah Winters put back a rebound on a save after a corner.

SLU's lone goal came just under eight minutes later when Habert scored her eighth of the season from Anna Parker on a shot from in close following a corner.

Skidmore put it away with two in the fourth quarter, both after corners. Annabelle Oates fed Morgan Sickels in the middle and Sickles scored her second of the year at 49:37. Carrie Hughes converted from Sofia Marshall on a cross crease pass to end the scoring at 54:23.

Gaetgens had 10 saves, marking her third time at 10 or more stops this season.

The Thoroughbreds host William Smith on Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.
