Skidmore ties Oneonta, 1-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Vanessa Eljaiek scored the lone goal for the Skidmore College women's soccer team, who fought to a 1-1 draw against Oneonta on a hot Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.

Skidmore's record stands at 4-1-2, while Oneonta is 2-2-2.

Eljaiek was busy offensively for the Thoroughbreds early. After a couple of shots hit the crossbar in the seventh and 30th minute, the sophomore finally found the net in the 39th minute. Yasmine Boukari beat a few Oneonta defenders to the outside on the left wing, launching a low cross into the box. Eljaiek positioned herself well, taking the first touch low into the back of the net.

Oneonta turned up the pressure in the second half, and was rewarded with a goal in the 85th minute. A long pass by Seaver Lipshie from the center line found Christina Kornfeld, as she slipped past the Skidmore defense for a breakaway. Skidmore goalkeeper Vivian Montgomery-Walsh made a great attempt to get a hand on Kornfeld's shot from the top of the box, but the ball rolled harmlessly into the right corner of the net.

Skidmore nearly won it in the final two minutes of regulation. Liz Saraceno broke free of the Oneonta defender on the right wing, lifting a cross into the box towards Brianna Worobel, but the feed was inches too high, and the ball rolled out of play.

The Thoroughbreds outshot the Red Dragons 2-1 in the overtime session, but neither team was able to net the game-winner.

Oneonta outshot Skidmore by a 21-18 margin, but the Thoroughbreds amassed more shots on goal, 8-6. Ava Keller made four saves in 65 minutes of action. Montgomery-Walsh made one save in the second half. Claire Lepper was busy in net, making seven saves in 110 minutes.

Skidmore will face its final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday, visiting Sage in Albany for a 7 p.m. start.
