SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A late rally by the Skidmore College field hockey team fell just short on Friday, as the Thoroughbreds fell to No. 18 Babson by a 2-1 score at Wagner Park.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 1-3 on the season. Babson wins its fourth straight contest, improving to 4-1.
Skidmore's lone goal came off a penalty corner in the 48
th minute.
Gabrielle Vaccaro, handling the corner, fed
Carrie Hughes just inside the arc. With no defenders around her, Hughes launched a shot that Vaccaro rerouted, above the goalie into cage.
The Thoroughbreds had a pair of chances to knot the contest late on a penalty corner, but a pair of
Sarah Winters shots in front of goal was blocked by the Babson defense.
Lauren Curley powered the Babson offense Friday afternoon, scoring a pair of goals. She opened the game with the first of her goals just 47 seconds into regulation, shooting from the left side of the arc past Skidmore goalie
Jess Gaetgens into net. Curley doubled up in the third quarter, in the 37
th minute. A one-time feed from Quinn Greer found Curley in front of net, as she fought through the Skidmore defense and poked the shot into net.
Babson held a 22-8 shot advantage and earned seven penalty corners, to Skidmore's four. Gaetgens made nine saves in the effort, while Cassidy Riley made three saves in the win.
The Thoroughbreds will continue the home stand on Sunday, hosting Castleton at 2 p.m. from Wagner Park.
