Women's Soccer holds off Hartwick, 2-1

Emily Vinick scores twice to power the Thoroughbreds

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. –  Emily Vinick powered the Skidmore College women's soccer offense, scoring twice in Skidmore's 2-1 victory over Hartwick, in non-league action at Wachenheim Field Wednesday night.

The Thoroughbreds held off a strong Hartwick comeback attempt to improve to 3-0-1 on the season. Hartwick falls to 3-2.

Carly Craft nearly opened the scoring for Skidmore in the ninth minute. A well-placed ball from Vanessa Eljaiek found a speedy Craft in the middle of the field. Craft beat her defender and launched a low shot that went just wide of the net.

The Thoroughbreds struck gold with Vinick's first career goal in the 27th minute. A long cross by Isabella Nevin found Vinick at the edge of the penalty box. Vinick gathered and chipped the keeper high.

Vinick doubled up about eight minutes later, in the 35th minute. Eljaiek sent a long cross on the left side to Vinick on the right. Vinick finished with a low shot in the box past the keeper.

A handball by the Hartwick defense in the penalty box opened up an penalty kick opportunity for Yasmine Boukari in the 58th minute. Boukari went left, but Hartwick goalie Cassandra Robataille guessed correctly, making the diving save. Seven minutes later, Hartwick cut the deficit in half. Skidmore cleared a Hartwick corner opportunity, but the ball fell at the feet of Samantha Ford on the left side. Ford crossed it back into the box, right to Gabrielle Kreppein. Kreppein read the Skidmore back line perfectly, getting behind the defense to chip the goalkeeper.

Hartwick increased the pressure, but the Skidmore defense kept the Hawks away from net. The Hawks only tallied one shot in the final 25:47.

The Thoroughbreds outshot Hartwick by an 11-5 margin. Both teams tallied five shots on net and earned two corner kicks.
