Thoroughbreds drop 2-1 decision to Saint Joseph’s

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College field hockey team opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The Monks scored first when Thoroughbred goalie Jess Gaetgens made a quality save on Emma Rutledge, but the rebound found its way to Meghan Hill who had a wide-open net for the 1-0 lead.

Skidmore didn't take long to tie. Sarah Winters rifled one from 14 yards out off a corner from Sofia Marshall and Carrie Hughes at 25:26.

The eventual Saint Joseph game-winner came in the early in the third quarter when Megan Quirion collected a long dump-in beat the Thoroughbred defense at 33:20.

Skidmore had a 21-10 shot and 15-8 corner advantage.

Marley Wahler and Madeleine Michaels had defensive saves on the same play for the Thoroughbreds. Gaetgens finished with four saves.

Alexandria Simpson stopped 11 shots for the Monks.

Skidmore travels to Geneseo on Sept. 7 for a 12 p.m. game.
