ITHACA, N.Y. – The 17
th-ranked Skidmore College men's tennis team are back on top of the Liberty League mountain Sunday afternoon, as the top-ranked Thoroughbreds defeated second-seeded RPI 5-0 in the Liberty League Championship match at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center.
Skidmore (15-5) claims the Liberty League Championship trophy and earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons. The title is Skidmore's 11
th all-time. The Thoroughbreds exact revenge from last season's Liberty League championship loss to the Engineers, and are now 4-1 against the squad in championship matches. RPI, ranked 34
th in the nation, finishes its season at 10-7.
It was a close match despite the winning margin. In doubles,
Jack McClaren and
Jason Keye got Skidmore on the board with an 8-2 win at No. 3. A little later,
Travis Leaf and
Suraj Mahtani held off Dylan Payne and Zach Ebenfeld at No. 2, 8-6. The first doubles match was a classic effort from both teams, but
JT Wynne and
Noah Williamson, the sixth-ranked doubles tandem in the Northeast region, defeated the ninth-ranked duo in Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie after winning the tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5).
Moving to singles,
Connor Biernat put Skidmore on the verge of a championship with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ebenfeld at No. 6. Wynne, the Liberty League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, put the finishing touches on the match with his second victory over Castillo-Sanchez this season. The fourth-ranked player in the Northeast region took down No. 16 Castillo-Sanchez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. McClaren and Williamson led in the second set of their matches as Wynne clinched the match for the Thoroughbreds.
