No. 17 Skidmore tops TCNJ 5-1 in NCAA Second Round

Thoroughbreds advance to NCAA Regional Final, will face host Bowdoin Saturday at 1:15 p.m.

BRUNSWICK, Maine –The Skidmore College men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Regional Final for the fourth time in five seasons. The 17th-ranked Thoroughbreds earned a 5-1 victory over The College of New Jersey in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon, held at the Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness Center.

Skidmore improves to 16-5 with the victory, winning its fourth consecutive match. The 16 victories are the most for the Thoroughbreds since the 2008-09 season. Skidmore will take on regional host and eighth-ranked Bowdoin for the regional championship Saturday at 1:15 p.m. TCNJ, ranked 33rd in the country, finishes its season at 15-4.

The Thoroughbreds took two of the three doubles matches to earn the advantage. At third doubles, the team of Jason Keye and Jack McClaren earned its 10th consecutive win, defeating Matt Puig and Andrew Mok, 8-3. JT Wynne and Noah Williamson improved to 11-5 with their 8-4 first doubles victory over Tim Gavornik and Matthew Michibata.

In singles, Wynne quickly gave Skidmore a healthy 3-1 lead by defeating Michael Sanders at the top spot, a 6-3, 6-2 win. Not too long after, Connor Biernat continued his hot streak, winning his seventh game in a row after a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Thomas Wright. TCNJ battled in an attempt to even things up, but the Thoroughbreds were able to prevail, as McClaren sent Skidmore to the regional final, defeating Michibata at No. 2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The Thoroughbreds will look for revenge after a shutout loss to Bowdoin in California during Spring Break. After the Bowdoin loss in March, Skidmore began its run, going 11-2 in its last 13 matches.
