ITHACA, N.Y. – The 17
th-ranked Skidmore College men's tennis team is once again in the Liberty League Championship match, as the top-seeded Thoroughbreds took down fourth-seeded Ithaca 5-1 in the league semifinal held at the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University Saturday afternoon.
Skidmore (14-5) advances to its ninth consecutive Liberty League final. The Thoroughbreds face second seed RPI on Sunday at 2 p.m. It's a rematch of last year's title contest which was won by the Engineers, snapping Skidmore's four-year title run. Ithaca finishes its season at 6-13.
Doubles went the way of the Thoroughbreds, earning a 3-0 sweep.
Jack McClaren and
Jason Keye got Skidmore on the board with their 8-4, third doubles victory over Liam Spiegel and Sam McGrath.
JT Wynne and
Noah Williamson then defeated the duo of Minos Stavrakas and Colten Lavery 8-6 at No. 1.
Travis Leaf and
Suraj Mahtani then finished the sweep, defeating Michael Gardiner and Max Prestwich 8-5 at No. 2.
In singles, McClaren, playing in the top spot, defeated Stavrakas 6-3, 6-4. McGrath got Ithaca on the board with his win over Leaf at No. 2, but Williamson closed the match for Skidmore, sending the Thoroughbreds to the title match after his 6-1, 6-3 win over Gardiner at No. 3.
Connor Biernat and
Tristan Thiebaut each led in their matches when the Thoroughbreds clinched.
Skidmore and RPI will meet in the title match for the fifth time in Liberty League history on Sunday. Skidmore is 3-1 in the previous four matches.
