Third-quarter run pushes Clarkson past Skidmore

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Clarkson pulled away with a big third quarter, pushing past the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team by a 19-7 score in Liberty League action from Hantz Field Wednesday afternoon.
 
Skidmore falls to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in league action. Clarkson (6-4, 1-2) wins its first league contest.
 
After Clarkson opened the game with a goal, Skidmore's offense briefly came alive with three straight goals. Will Lukas assisted Alex Miller's goal that tied the game at one. On Skidmore's next possession, Miller fed Eric Megnia to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 lead at the 11:17 mark. Later in the period, Lukas capped the run with an unassisted goal, as Skidmore led 3-1. Clarkson matched the Thoroughbreds with three straight goals, taking a 4-3 lead after one.
 
Clarkson began the period with three more goals, taking a 7-4 lead. Skidmore fought to keep the game in reach with a second Megnia goal. After Clarkson struck back, Miller and Lukas scored as the Thoroughbreds trailed 8-6 with 4:39 to go in the half. Skidmore had an opportunity to get closer with about two minutes remaining, but Golden Knights goalie Kevin Dyckman held the Thoroughbreds at bay.
 
The second half was all Clarkson, as the Golden Knights outscored Skidmore 6-0 in the third quarter to take a commanding 14-6 lead. Clarkson stretched its run to 10-0 before the Thoroughbreds finally snapped the drought with a Thomas Kelly goal with 3:36 to go in regulation. Clarkson finished the scoring with a man-up goal by KJ Sarni.
 
Lukas and Miller finished with three points, each tallying two goals and an assist. Megnia added two goals, while Kelly also scored. Hudson Miller added an assist. Nick Georgalas and Tim Rahill each added three ground balls. Rahill also tallied 11 saves in the effort.
 
Pierce Currie led Clarkson with nine points, via eight goals and one assist. Conor Bartlett added five goals and three assists for eight points. Riley Holzman added seven ground balls and went 18-for-25 on face-offs. Dyckman made seven saves in the victory. The Golden Knights outshot Skidmore by a 48-25 margin.
 
The Thoroughbreds will return to action on Saturday, hosting 19th-ranked St. Lawrence from Wachenheim Field at 3 p.m.
