Skidmore shuts out Union in regular season finale

Thoroughbreds finish league slate unbeaten for fifth straight year

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The 17th-ranked Skidmore College men's tennis team bounced back from a Saturday loss with a Sunday night triumph, sweeping Union 9-0 in the regular season finale at the Wenger Tennis Courts.
 
The Thoroughbreds finish the regular season with a 13-5 overall record and another perfect Liberty League record (8-0). Skidmore finishes the league season undefeated for the fifth straight year, winning its 38th consecutive league match. The Thoroughbreds will head to the Liberty League Tournament as the top overall seed, as they await the Ithaca/Vassar winner on Saturday, May 4.
 
Skidmore held off Union to take a 3-0 doubles sweep. JT Wynne and Noah Williamson picked up an 8-6 win at the top spot over Ioannis Binopoulos and David Bond, while Jack McClaren and Jason Keye notched an 8-5 win over Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman at No. 3. Travis Leaf and Suraj Mahtani had an easier time, defeating Austin and Max Egna 8-3 at No. 2.
 
In singles, Connor Biernat picked up his second consecutive win of the weekend, defeating Max Egna 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Williamson won with the same score, defeating Schunk at No. 3. Mahtani conceded just two points in a 6-1, 6-1 win against Austin Egna at No. 4. Jack McClaren (6-1, 6-4) and Tristan Thiebaut (6-4, 6-1) picked up wins at No. 2 and 6, respectively. Wynne finished the match, holding off Binopoulos 7-6 (5), 6-2.
 
It was a nice bounce-back performance after an upset by the hands of No. 31 MIT (11-5) on Saturday. Skidmore held a 2-1 lead after wins by the teams of Leaf and Mahtani at No. 2 and Keye and McClaren at No. 3. At first singles, Wynne and Williamson fought valiantly but fell in the tiebreak to Alex Cauneac and Tyler Barr, an 8-7 (10-7) final score.
 
MIT flipped the script in singles, winning five of six matches. Biernat was the lone winner at No. 6, defeating Charles Deng by a 6-3, 6-1 score.
