WILTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team clinched the top seed in the Liberty League Tournament for the third straight season, after topping Vassar by a 8-1 score Saturday afternoon at the Wilton YMCA.
The 17
th-ranked Thoroughbreds finish the league undefeated for the third year in a row and have won the last 28 matches against league opponents.
Skidmore jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. The team of
Lily Feldman and
Sofia Carlsson swept Cara Kizilbash and Joyce Park 8-0 at No. 3. The No. 1 tandem of
Risa Fukushige and
Renee Karchere-Sun won their seventh match in eight tries, defeating Frances Cornwall and Tara Edwards 8-4.
Audrey SooHoo and
Jessica Ampel completed the sweep with an 8-4 win against Sarra Yekta and Melina Stavropoulos at No. 2.
Karchere-Sun was perfect in singles, sweeping Edwards 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Feldman put Skidmore at the brink of clinching with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Stavropoulos. Moments later,
Dea Koiava clinched the match, defeating Yekta 6-2, 6-1. SooHoo defeated Morgane Flournoy 6-2, 6-2, while Fukushige held off Cornwall at the top spot, defeating the fellow sophomore 6-3, 6-3.
The Thoroughbreds will finish the regular season at home next Saturday, hosting No. 5 Middlebury at 1 p.m.
