SARATOGA SPRNGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College hockey team lost 4-1 at home to New England Hockey Conference leader UMASS Boston Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The loss leaves the Thoroughbreds at 11-9-2 overall and 7-6-2 in the NEHC. The 7
th ranked Beacons are 17-5 and 13-2.
UMB struck early when Bryan Carter scored on a deflection at 2:05 from Nolan Redler and Zack Bross. Bross made it 2-0 off a rebound at 16:24 for his ninth goal of the season. Redler and Chris Peters assisted.
Skidmore failed to take advantage of a 1:55 5-on-3 in the scoreless second period. Beacon goalie Bailey MacBurnie had 13 saves in the period,
including three while shorthanded.
UMB's Ethan Nitkin was whistled for contact to the head major at 2:28 of the third. The Beacons kept the Skidmore power play in check again. UMB took a 3-0 lead shortly after killing off the penalty when Jeffery Skinner came up with the puck all alone in front for his fourth of the season at 8:21. Pat Harrington and John Bonno assisted.
Bonno made it 4-0 off a rebound at 14:52 from Peters and Garrison Sanipass.at
Matt Wolf finally solved MacBurnie when he scooted home a rebound just off the goal line at 17:30 to get the Thoroughbreds on the board.
Matt Muzyka and
Corey Morgan assisted.
Skidmore was 0-6 on the power play, while UMB went 0-3.
The Beacons had a 34-29 shot advantage. Skidmore's
Brandon Kasel had 30 saves, including three without a stick during a :30 span late in the third period. MacBurnie finished with 28 saves.
The Thoroughbreds are home Saturday at 4 p.m. against Babson. UMB travels to Hobart for a 4 p.m. game.
