SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – William Smith held off a late Skidmore College rally for a 68-66 Liberty League win Friday night at the Williamson Center.
The Thoroughbreds drop to 2-5, 0-1 in the league, while the Herons improve to 4-2, 1-0 in conference play.
Jessica Centore led three Skidmore players in double figures with 21 points. She added an seven rebounds, four steals and a block.
Kate McCarney led the team in the paint with eight rebounds and contributed 11 points.
Meggy Wiley was key in the Thoroughbreds late run in the fourth quarter, finishing with 10 points.
Olivia Parisi led three Herons players with double-doubles. She scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds. Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou tallied a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds alongside Lauren DeVaney who scored 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds
With the Thoroughbreds trailing 62-53 with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter, Centore hit a key three pointer to reduce the deficit to six. This was the beginning of a nine-point run for the Thoroughbreds as Centore went on to make a key steal and layup in the following procession. After a quick stop on defense, Wiley hit a two-pointer followed by another steal by Centore. Wiley topped the run off with an additional two points off a rebound to tie the game 62-62.
The Herons quickly gained the advantage off of a quick layup hit a pair of free throws to lead 66-62 with 17 seconds to play. The teams exchanged free throws and then and McCarney cut the deficit to one, 67-66 with a deep three with six seconds left. The Herons hit a final free throw to hold on for the 68-66 win.
The Thoroughbreds return to the Williamson Center tomorrow to face Liberty League rival RIT at 2 p.m.
