Third Quarter Surge Sends Oneonta past Skidmore, 59-49

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – After a close first half, the Skidmore women's basketball team couldn't edge past SUNY Oneonta in a 59-49 loss Saturday afternoon at the Williamson Sport Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds start 0-1 on the season while the Red Dragons move to 1-0.
 
Kate McCarney led the Thoroughbreds in scoring as well as rebounds with 12 points and five rebounds. Jessica Centore finished close behind her off the bench with a total of 10 points and four rebounds. Centore also tallied three steals in the season opener while McCarney added another two steals. Toyin Koleoso added to the scoring mix with six points alongside five rebounds. Freshman Meggy Wiley made a big impact off the bench with seven points and four rebounds in her Skidmore debut.
 
Alexa Amalbert topped the Red Dragons in scoring with 17 points, while Leanne Corso led Oneonta on the boards with seven rebounds. Olivia Dobrovosky added another 13 points along with three steals.
 
The Thoroughbreds kept it close in the first half with neither team leading by more than eight points. The first half ended with Oneonta on top by one after a last second jumper by Koleoso sent the Thoroughbreds into halftime trailing 27-26.
 
Oneonta came out strong in the third quarter holding Skidmore to only nine points and scoring 12 points in the last three minutes of the quarter, for a 47-35 lead. Despite outscoring the Red Dragons 14-12 in the fourth quarter, the Thoroughbreds couldn't overcome the deficit.
 
Skidmore heads to Rochester for the Chuck Resler Tournament Friday Nov. 15 for a nonconference match up against Baldwin Wallace University at 1 p.m.
