Brewers advance in overtime, 2-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Stephanie Palma scored with 32 seconds left in the first overtime to send Vassar College to the Liberty League championship game with a dramatic 2-1 win over Skidmore College Wednesday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The Thoroughbreds finish 12-9. The defending champion and 16th ranked Brewers are 15-3.

The game was a midfield battle for the first three quarters with the teams combining for only 13 total shots through 45 minutes.

With the clock running out in the fourth quarter, Sarah Winters put Skidmore up 1-0 when she recovered a loose ball off a rebound scramble and scored her sixth goal of the season with 2:59 to play in regulation. Joran Mjaatvedt lofted the original shot high that an outstretched Julianna Smith was able to knock down for the save. Winters came up with the ball in traffic for the score.

Vassar responded quickly with a goal off a corner. Palmer inserted directly to Rylie Pope who blasted a shot from a step inside the circle to tie it 1-1 with 2:14 to play.

Both teams had scoring chances in the overtime. Mariah Redler nearly won for Skidmore off a corner with 1:15 left in the first overtime, but her shot narrowly missed wide.

The Brewers quickly advanced up field and Palma got a quick shot off with :45 seconds left that goalie Maddy Carre got a piece of. Palmer nearly won it seven seconds later, but Sofia Marshall made her second defensive save of the overtime.

On the ensuing corner Cristina Lopez directed the ball to Palma who registered the game winner with :32 seconds left.

The game was even on the turf and on paper. Shots were 13-13 and Vassar had a slight 8-7 edge in penalty corners.

Carre had four saves, while Smith finished with seven.

In addition to Marshall's two defensive saves, Madeline Michaels had a D-save in the first half.

The young Thoroughbred squad overcame a 3-5 start to win eight of nine on the way to a 12-8 regular season record that include a first place regular season Liberty League finish.
