SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— A pair of first quarter goals held up for Vassar College in a 2-1 Liberty League field hockey win over Skidmore College Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park. The loss ended a five-game Thoroughbred win streak.
The Liberty League final standings were already set going into the game. The Thoroughbreds (11-7, 6-1 Liberty) are the regular season champion and first seed. The Brewers (13-3, 5-2) are the fourth seed and will make a return trip to Saratoga for a quarterfinal game on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
Vassar went up 1-0 when Stephanie Palma got past a Skidmore defender and fired a point blank shot into the cage at 2:26.
Niki Rizzo made it 2-0 when she faked a shot and then found the net at 13:25.
Skidmore battled back in the third quarter. Following a corner,
Marley Wahler took a clean pass from
Sarah Winters and rocketed a shot from 15 yards out, through traffic and past Vassar goalie Julianna Smith to cut it to 2-1.
The Thoroughbreds had their chances the rest of the way, but Vassar held on for the 2-1 win.
Skidmore had 9-8 edge in shots and 7-5 corner advantage.
Maddy Carre (7-1) had one save and suffered her first loss in eight decisions. Smith finished with five saves for Vassar.
The Thoroughbreds will close out the season with two non-league games, starting with a home game Wednesday at 3:30 against Utica College and ending with a road game on Nov. 1 at Cortland.
