Thoroughbreds stumble at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Vassar College outscored Skidmore 18-8 over the final 5:27 in a 77-65 Liberty League win Tuesday night.

The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 8-6 and 6-2 Liberty League. The Brewers earn the season split to go 7-8 and 3-5.

Noah Meren led Skidmore with 21 points. Edvinas Rupkus added 18 points and nine rebounds and Greg Skoric had 14 points and eight rebounds. Chas Ta contributed nine assists and three steals.

Alex Seff came off the bench to lead four Vassar players in double figures with 18 points.

The Brewers had a 40-10 advantage in bench scoring.

Skidmore took an early 14-8 lead on a Rupkus three pointer at the 14:43 mark. Vassar used an 11-4 run to take a 19-18 lead with 10:35 left. The Thoroughbreds kept it within two possessions, trailing 34-29 at the half.

Skidmore rallied back twice to tie it in the second half. The first time from an 11-point deficit to tie it 48-48 at 10:40 on a tradition three-point play by Rupkus. The teams traded 5-0 runs for a 53-53 score with 8:13 left.

The game remained tight until the final Vassar run.

"This was another unacceptable performance," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. "We have so much work to do to get to where we need to go. We need to play better individually, collectively and have to find another gear when times get tough. Right now we are lacking the toughness it takes to consistently win games and they need to have more pride in wearing the jersey."

Skidmore is back home for a weekend pair against Bard on Friday at 7 and Ithaca on Saturday at 4.
