SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Skidmore battled back twice to force overtime in a 3-3 tie with Norwich University in New England Hockey Conference play Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds are tied with Hobart for fourth in the NEHC with a 9-6-2 overall and 5-3-2 league record. The Cadets are one point back at 8-4-3 overall and 5-4-1 in conference.
It was the second overtime game of the season between the teams. Skidmore lost 2-1 at Norwich on Nov. 2.
The game featured end-to-end skating for the entire 65 minutes, with few stops and only one penalty.
The Thoroughbreds scored on the game's second shift when
Brandon Borges scored the first of his two goals at 1:10 from
Avery Steele and
Reid Russell. Norwich tied with a quick transition goal by a fast moving Maxime Borduas from Jordan Hall at 13:37.
The Cadets went in front 2-1 on a broken play goal by Brett Ouderkirk with assists from Noah Williams and Colby Downs at 17:32.
Borges tied it with the lone goal of the second period when
Avery Steele's original shot clanged off the cross bar to Borges who tallied his fifth of the season at 11:09.
Will Steele had the second assist.
Norwich went back in front in the third when Borduas raced up the right side to find Felix Brassard alone in front for his fifth goal of the season at 4:40. Josh Cronin was credited with the second assist.
The team traded chances over the next 10 minutes, until Skidmore broke through to tie it.
Matt Wolf won a faceoff to the left of Cadet goalie Tom Auburn. Wolf moved in front of the net and dribbled a rebound past Auburn to tie the game at 15:58.
Tyler Hall picked-up the assist.
It was end-to-end in the overtime with only two whistles over the five minutes.
Tim Allen nearly won it for the Thoroughbreds when Auburn turned away his wrap-around shot at the buzzer.
Shots were even at 24.
Brandon Kasel had 21 saves, including three in the overtime for Skidmore. Auburn also finished with 21 saves, two in the extra period.
The Thoroughbreds host travel partner Hobart College on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. The Cadets host Babson on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
