SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A first-half goal by the Skidmore College field hockey team was enough as the Thoroughbreds got past Geneseo 1-0, in the home opener at Wagner Park Saturday afternoon.
Skidmore improved to 2-1, while Geneseo falls to 2-2.
Senior
Gabby Hyman got Skidmore on the board in the 15th minute. Off a penalty corner, Geneseo made a save, but the ball found senior
Grace Florsheim, who found Hyman deep in the penalty arc, the low shot just getting by the goalie. It's the 99th career point for the senior, who will look to be the 16th member of the 100-point club.
Skidmore held strong on defense as Geneseo tried to even things up in the second half. Senior
Elizabeth Coughlin was busy in cage, making seven saves to earn her first shutout of the season, and Skidmore's second in a row.
Skidmore outshot Geneseo by a 12-10 margin, including an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Skidmore also earned eight penalty corners in the contest.
Skidmore goes back on the road for the next contest, on Sept. 11 at Hamilton College, a 5:30 p.m. start.
