Thoroughbreds hold off Geneseo for 1-1 tie

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College men's soccer team held off a late Geneseo charge in extra time, settling for the 1-1 draw after 110 minutes at Wachenheim Stadium on a cool Friday evening.

Skidmore's record stands at 1-1-1, while Geneseo is 0-1-2.

The Thoroughbreds looked to be the better team early, possessing the ball mostly in the Geneseo end. Skidmore broke through in the 26th minute. Off a deflection by Geneseo goalie Dillon Medd, junior David Braman corralled the loose ball, firing a low shot in traffic that beat the keeper to the right.

Geneseo looked to knot the game at one late in the first half, but a late header just went over the crossbar, as the teams headed into halftime. Just after the half, Geneseo had its best chance to score, as a shot by Jeremy Contreas slid under Skidmore junior goalie Sebastian Bosch, but Braman made the diving effort to keep the ball out of the net.

Not too long after, Skidmore had its best chance to go ahead. A deft pass by senior Mike Park found junior Matt Schwab onside, but couldn't get the first touch past the diving Geneseo keeper. The ball corralled to Park well outside of the box, who shot a rocket towards the open net, but the shot went high.

From there, Skidmore tried to hold off a Geneseo charge, but the Knights tied it up at one in the 82nd minute. Off a corner kick, Junsei Ro found Caleb Murthy deep in the penalty box for a header that got past Bosch to his left. Skidmore had one last opportunity to win it late, but a header by senior Noah Lehrecke went wide.

In overtime, Skidmore held off multiple Geneseo runs at net. Bosch made a number of stops on crosses and earned one tip save to salvage the draw. He made a season-high seven saves in the effort.

Shots favored Skidmore by a narrow 19-18 margin, although Geneseo held an 8-7 advantage in shots on net.

The Thoroughbreds will wrap up the weekend with a home match against Elms on Saturday at 4 p.m.
