Volleyball prepares to host Skidmore Classic

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team is back at the Williamson Sports Center this weekend, hosting the 2018 Skidmore Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Skidmore will compete with New Rochelle, Oneonta, St. John Fisher, and Roger Williams in the two-day event, with Plattsburgh also set to compete. Live stats and video will be available for the court one matches. Skidmore will face New Rochelle (4 p.m.) and St. John Fisher (8 p.m.) on day one, and Oneonta (11 a.m.) and Roger Williams (3 p.m.) on day two.

The Thoroughbreds (10-4, 2-0 Liberty League) are off to a strong start, winners of six of its last seven matches. Last weekend, they opened up Liberty League action, defeating league foe Vassar in four sets in Poughkeepsie on Friday, before returning home to defeat Bard in three sets on Saturday.

Junior Katy Ehnstrom was named the Liberty League Performer of the Week for her stellar play last weekend. Ehnstrom combined for 27 kills, and set a new Skidmore single-match hitting percentage mark of .813 in a three-set match against Bard. Ehnstrom, always an accurate hitter, is even more so this season, as she is currently fourth in all of Division III with a season hitting percentage of .437. The junior also leads the team with 3.38 kills per set.

Skidmore has a number of offensive weapons, including last season's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Caite Canfield, who is among the Liberty League leaders in her senior season with 3.04 kills per set. Fellow senior Bailey Hutchins averages 1.74 kills per set and is second on the team with a solid .303 hitting percentage. Junior Sophia Hettler is third on the team with 2.04 kills per set.

Junior Lauren Wolters and freshman Lily Fitzgerald have had a solid season so far pacing the Skidmore attack. Wolters leads the team with 5.08 assists per set, while Fitzgerald is right behind at 4.96 assists per set. Fitzgerald has also been outstanding when serving, currently leading the league with 36 service aces (0.68 per set), and an opportunistic attacker, with a .328 hitting percentage.

Defensively, senior Allie Dillon leads the Thoroughbreds and is second in the Liberty League with 5.53 digs per set. Early in the season, Dillon set a Skidmore record with an impressive 40-dig performance back on Aug. 31 against Rhode Island College.  Canfield is also among the league leaders in this category, with 4.18 digs per set. Ehnstrom (20) and Hutchins (18) lead the team in total blocks.
