ITHACA, N.Y. – The top-seeded Skidmore College women's tennis team won an unprecedented eighth straight Liberty League title, defeating No. 2 Vassar 5-1 in the Liberty League Championship match, held at the Wheeler Courts Sunday afternoon.
 
Skidmore (15-5) earns the Liberty League's automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA Tournament, winning its 19
th consecutive league tournament match. Vassar finishes its season at 14-6.
 
Skidmore, ranked 18
th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National poll, got to an early lead in doubles, thanks to an 8-3 victory at No. 2 by the pair of 
Ada Wiggins and 
Renee Karchere-Sun. Not long after, 
Alexa Goldberg and 
Jessica Ampel would finish its match at No. 3, defeating Frances Cornwall and Tara Edwards 8-4. At No. 1, 
Risa Fukushige and 
Michelle Fuca would trail early to the duo of Kate Christensen and Morgane Flournoy, but rallied back to take a 5-4 lead in the match. Fukushige and Fuca would go 3-1 down the stretch to take the 8-5 victory, completing the doubles sweep.
 
Vassar put up a valiant effort in singles, taking a point at No. 2. Karchere-Sun would cruise in the first set of her match at No. 3, holding off a late charge by Edwards, winning 6-0, 6-3. 
Laura Swenson would clinch the championship for the Thoroughbreds at No. 5. Trailing late in the first set, Swenson would force the tiebreak, prevailing 7-4 over Courtney Geiss. Things would be a bit easier for her in the second, earning the crucial fifth team point after a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory.
