RPI tops Skidmore in league championship match

ITHACA, N.Y. – Second-seeded RPI broke Skidmore's 39-game Liberty League match streak, getting by the top-seeded Thoroughbreds 5-2 in the Liberty League Championship match, held at the Reis Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.
 
RPI () wins its first Liberty League Tournament title and will earn the league's automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Skidmore falls to 12-6 and will await a possible at-large bid into the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
 
Skidmore, ranked 26th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national poll, fell into an early hole after getting swept in doubles. The Thoroughbreds began a comeback against the 27th-ranked Engineers, getting on the board at second singles. JT Wynne would battle in the first set but cruise in the second of a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Andrew Imrie. Ted Berkowitz would get the second point, picking up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 against McKinley Grimes. RPI got to the brink of victory with a win at No. 4, then clinched with a victory at the top spot. Travis Leaf and Suraj Mahtani were tied at one set apiece at Nos. 3 and 6, respectively when the championship was clinched.
