Thoroughbreds win third straight, 12-8 over Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team won its third consecutive game, getting solid play from its top scorers in a 12-8 victory over Union, in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon.
 
Skidmore (8-4 4-2 Liberty League) has moved into fourth place in the Liberty League standings after its third straight league win. Union falls to 0-4 in the league and 0-8 overall.
 
Cas Szwajkowski tallied four goals to lead the Thoroughbreds, adding four ground balls and five draw controls. Natalie LaBeau and Shelby Boland would also tally four points each, on a trio of goals and one assist. Emily Hirsch would bag a pair of goals, while Marisa Caponi got into the points column with an assist. Eight Thoroughbreds – Szwajkowski, LaBeau, Hirsch, Caponi, Grace Connerty, Teyana Daley, Lilla Seymour, and Amanda Cagnassola – would cause a turnover on the defensive end. Caroline Kenlon made three saves in the victory.
 
Hannah Rosenberger tallied four goals to lead Union, while Isabel Bush added two more. Ellen Tanney made 16 saves in the decision. Skidmore would outshoot Union by a 35-15 margin, including a 28-11 edge in shots on goal.

It was a game of swings, as each team made long runs to take the lead. After Szwajkowski and LaBeau tallied goals to get Skidmore ahead in the first, a 3-0 Union run gave the Dutchwomen the lead with 4:17 to go. Both teams were kept off the scoreboard as Union held the 3-2 halftime lead.

The second half saw 15 combined goals between the two combatants. Boland opened the half with a goal to tie the game at three, but Union would score two more, taking a 5-3 lead. Three straight goals, bookended by Szwajkowski tallies, would give Skidmore its first lead of the half at 6-5 at the 14:51 mark. Union would knot the game three minutes later, and both teams traded goals, as the teams entered the last seven minutes of the game tied at seven.
 
The Thoroughbreds would begin to pull away from the Dutchwomen with a 3-0 run in a 3:39 span, capped off by a Hirsch goal with man disadvantage, as Skidmore held its biggest lead of the game at 10-7. Union would score its final goal with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but Skidmore would close things out with two goals, including a Boland tally with three seconds left.
 
Skidmore converted on 2-of-4 free position shots, while Union went 1-for-2. Skidmore also forced 22 Union turnovers in the win.
 
The Thoroughbreds will head to Vassar in its next game, on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. start.
