Skidmore rallies to defeat Brandeis, 6-3

WILTON, N.Y. – The No. 17 Skidmore College women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit with strong play in singles, defeating No. 22 Brandeis 6-3, in a battle of top-25 teams inside the Wilton YMCA Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore (11-3) wins its sixth match in seven tries, and will complete the busy weekend with a road trip to No. 4 Middlebury on Sunday. Brandeis (7-6) will travel to Babson next Friday.
 
The Thoroughbreds trailed 2-1 after three doubles matches, but won five of six singles matches to earn the victory. Michelle Fuca and Risa Fukushige earned the lone doubles point at No. 1, defeating Brandeis' Sabrina R. Neergaard and Keren Khromchenko by an 8-2 score.
 
Fuca and Fukushige also picked up singles victories. Fukushige defeated Khromchenko in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, while Fuca defeated Lauren Bertsch 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Ada Wiggins edged Haley Cohen at No. 2 by a 7-6, 7-5 score. Ampel breezed through the first set and fought in the second set of her 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 6. Laura Swenson dropped her first set at No. 5, but breezed through her second and third to earn the victory against Michele Lehat, a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 score.
 
Skidmore will face Middlebury at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
