SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team earned a doubleheader split against Sage in non-league action at Wagner Park Tuesday afternoon. Skidmore won the first game by a 9-2 score, while Sage picked up the 7-4 win in game two.
Skidmore's record now stands at 12-10, while Sage's record is 5-7.
Game one was an offensive explosion for the Thoroughbreds, who got started with six runs in the first two innings. After
Lizette Roman-Johnston began the inning with a single,
Karly Fishkin got Skidmore on the board with a double to center field. Later in the inning, a two-out error by Sage plated a pair of Skidmore runs, then
Amanda Carilli made the Gators pay with an RBI single to center field to cap off the four-run inning. The Thoroughbreds would add two on a pair of RBI singles by
Emily Popp and
Jill Strileckis in the second inning, as Skidmore held a 6-0 lead.
A Skidmore error with two outs would eventually get Sage on the board in the top of the third, as they added two runs to make it 6-2. In the fourth, Skidmore would answer with a
Hannah Paolucci RBi single up the middle, and a sacrifice fly by Popp, taking an 8-2 lead. They would add another run in the fifth on a
Heather Mak RBI single.
It was more than enough runs for Carilli (9-4), who got back into the win column after going the distance, allowing two unearned runs over eight hits, striking out two batters. Her counterpart, Katerina Lagace (2-2) would allow six earned on eight hits in six innings pitched, but struck out six batters.
At the plate,
Lizette Roman-Johnston continued her solid play of late, going 2-for-4. Fishkin, Paolucci, Popp, Strileckis, Carilli, and Mak also tallied a hit. On the basepaths,
Kristina Foley stole a pair of bases.
Skidmore jumped out again in game two, as Mak provided the offense with a looping single just over the third baseman, scoring two in the second inning. However, errors would ultimately doom the Thoroughbreds. An error in the third inning led to a 3-run homer to center field by Sage's Katy Rimawi, as they took the 3-2 lead. In the fifth, a pair of errors helped Sage plate two, as the Gators took a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Skidmore would claw back, thanks to a two-RBI double from Roman-Johnston, as Skidmore trailed 5-4. Sage would add a pair of insurance runs on a Mikayla Culnan RBI double and a Rimawi RBI single in the sixth.
Mak tallied two of Skidmore's four hits in game two, as she also scored a run and stole a base. Roman-Johnston and Fishkin would get the other two hits. Popp (0-5) would allow five earned in seven innings pitched, striking out four batters.
Rimawi was perfect for Sage in game two, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Amy Hart (2-5) was effective in the circle, allowing three earned on four hits in seven innings, striking out nine batters.
Skidmore will return to Liberty League play this weekend, hosting the University of Rochester in a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
